Survival is one of the key goals of addiction recovery, and adventure therapy challenges the body and the mind in a natural environment. Skills such as crafting shelters from debris, building a fire, hunting, fishing, game trapping, and staying warm in cold environments will be mastered in adventure therapy. The idea is to push participants in new directions and to boost their confidence in an exciting environment.
Those who feel low energy or who lack motivation in their recovery often do well with motivational interviewing. This method is a positive and non-confrontational way to build a recovery path by identifying powerful motivational tools that drive a person to succeed. It requires talking with a skilled therapist and narrowing down the truly important things in a person's life, using them for inspiration and encouragement in treatment.
Family therapy and support taps into the love that is shared within a family unit or a close-knit group of people by surrounding patients with those they love in a counseling environment. Here, family issues that may contribute to addiction are worked out and new healing interactions fostered to help a person work towards positivity and acceptance.
